2020 Veloster: In detail
The exterior styling of the second generation Veloster is more intense and dynamic, enhancing the 2+1 door coupe’s unique design DNA.
A broad frontal treatment incorporating a sporty take on Hyundai’s distinctive cascading grille, with a steeper roofline, increased bonnet length, and boldly sculpted wheel arches develop a powerful and refined coupe image.
Inside the cabin, an asymmetrical design for the instrument panel and dashboard reflects the exterior styling, putting the focus on the driver.
Digital performance gauges (torque, G-force and turbo boost) combined with sports steering wheel and seats further reinforce that the new Veloster is engineered to be driven.
Veloster benefits from a comprehensive Australian-specific chassis tune, to maximise the high-performance potential of the improved body rigidity and lightweight independent multi-link suspension.
Other notable driver focused upgrades compared with the first generation Veloster include a quicker-ratio electric power steering system, enhancing steering responsiveness, and Torque Vectoring Control (TVC) which improves performance during cornering.
Veloster is available with a choice of 2.0-litre MPi Atkinson (110kW & 180Nm) or 1.6-litre turbocharged (150kW & 265Nm) powertrains, the latter featuring up to 275Nm over-boost function.
The entry Veloster 2.0L MPi engine is offered with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
Veloster Turbo and Turbo Premium are offered with a choice of six-speed manual or 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT).
A Drive Mode Select system allows drivers to tailor the Veloster’s characteristics to their driving style, with Normal and Sport modes featured in manual versions, and additional Eco and Smart modes in automatic/DCT versions.
Chassis and Suspension
All-new Veloster features a MacPherson strut front suspension combined with a lightweight independent multi-link rear setup.
The multi-link rear suspension delivers the dual benefits of superior ride comfort and increased handling capability compared with the preceding model’s torsion beam rear end.
The revamped multi-link suspension set-up with dual lower arms delivers:
- Improved stability during high-speed cornering
- Improved ride comfort through optimised bushing characteristics and reduced rear friction
- Enhanced cornering stability through toe-in increase in lateral force of rear wheels
- Enhanced steering through improvements to insulator structure
- Improved ride comfort through extended wheel stroke and bump stopper
- Improved ride comfort and steering through enhanced flexural characteristics of lower bushing on shock absorber
All-new Veloster’s motor-driven power steering system features a quicker-ratio rack, for enhanced responsiveness.
Australian Tuned
All-new Veloster benefits from an Australian-tuned suspension and steering calibration, as does every new Australian Hyundai model (except iLoad and iMax).
“The goal for Veloster was to have something that’s practical, comfortable and easy-to-drive but also super-rewarding; highly responsive and engaging, with lots of feedback,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Product Planning & Development Specialist, Tim Rodgers said.
“The advantage we had with Veloster is that it shares a great deal of platform DNA with both i30 and Elantra, thus we already had a large technical knowledge base which we could apply to this new tune.”
During the development process, the Hyundai Motor Company Australia Engineering division evaluated 15 front damper iterations and 28 rear damper iterations before arriving at production settings that best blend comfort and capability.
“The damper count is quite low compared with some of our other tunes since we were really able to harness that existing knowledge, as Veloster utilises similar damping technology, and exhibits a lot of similar characteristics to i30.
“In a lot of ways Veloster’s chassis calibration fell into place, and what we got in the end is a really fun car that performs exceptionally well on the most challenging roads,” Rodgers said.
Body Rigidity
All-new Veloster incorporates body structural advances that contribute to overall torsional rigidity that is increased by a substantial 27.6 percent compared with the preceding model.
New Veloster’s more rigid monocoque contributes to a high level of occupant safety in the event of collision, and provides the optimal basis for the development of desirable ride and handling characteristics.
Key to the increased structural stiffness are the extensive application of advanced high-strength steel, and the utilisation of hot stamped components, such as the A-pillars and side sills.
In addition, all-new Veloster is constructed with 121m of adhesives, 30 times more structural adhesive than the previous generation, which combined with spot welding produces a frame of exceptional rigidity.
Specific structural improvements include:
- Sturdier upper structure adjoining the front shock absorber reinforces the cowl
- Reinforcement of the cabin and rear opening sub-structures
- Use of a single side sill member and stronger rear side sill with sturdier seams for increased overall rigidity
- Structural improvements to the front sub-frame energy absorber
- Hot-stamped A-pillar and side sill for increased rigidity
Structural improvements to the front sub-frame energy absorber improve performance in frontal collisions, while the dual-rail reinforcement of the roof structure associated with the 2+1 door layout effectively disperses the forces associated with a lateral collision.
Torque Vectoring Control (TVC)
A new, Torque Vectoring Control (TVC) system delivers a deeper driver-to-machine connection.
Taking inputs from sophisticated wheel-speed sensors, the TVC system applies precision-level braking to the inside front wheel as the Veloster navigates a turn.
By minutely slowing the inside wheel, engine power is better utilised by the front wheel on the outside of the turn to improve grip and cornering stability, giving Veloster a planted yet agile feel.
Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, standard across the range, bring grip and precision to complement all-new Veloster’s dynamic chassis.
AERODYNAMICS
All-new Veloster incorporates a series of clever features designed to reduce aerodynamic drag, to maximise fuel efficiency and high-speed driving stability, while also reducing wind noise.
These include the tweaking of key upper body elements such as the rear spoiler and spoiler side garnish, and the slits at each side of the rear bumper.
Functional front air-curtains reduce air turbulence generated by the rotating wheels.
Additional underbody elements reduce air turbulence and drag beneath Veloster, including a front bumper lip, front and rear wheel deflectors, and engine compartment and floor undercover panels.
POWERTRAIN
New Veloster is available with 2.0-litre MPi petrol, and 1.6-litre petrol turbocharged powertrains.
The Gamma 1.6 T-GDI petrol turbo, direct-injected four-cylinder produces 150kW at 6000rpm and 265Nm of torque from 1500 to 4500rpm.
In addition, an over-boost function allows peak torque to temporarily reach up to 275Nm (between 2000 and 4000rpm) during full throttle acceleration. Over-boost is available when the engine has reached operating temperature.
An electronic wastegate actuator (EWGA) turbocharger allows the precise tailoring of boost and torque curves.
The Nu 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine brings increased performance and flexibility compared with the preceding model’s petrol 1.6 litre, producing 110kW at 6200rpm and 180Nm at 4500rpm.
It operates on the Atkinson combustion cycle to deliver maximum efficiency and reduced emissions.
New Veloster is available with either a six-speed manual, a six-speed automatic (2.0 MPi) or a seven-speed DCT transmission (1.6 Turbo GDI).
A Drive Sport (DS) mode in DCT models is designed for short bursts of ‘sporty’ driving, or when maximum responsiveness is required, such as for overtaking manoeuvres.
When the shift lever is moved from the ‘D’ position into the manual plane, the previously selected driving mode is superseded by DS mode, which is indicated by either S1 or S2 in the gauge cluster.
Digital Performance Gauges displayed on the central touchscreen in Turbo versions present the driver with real-time torque, G-force and turbo boost pressure levels, for an immersive and enjoyable driving experience.
To cater to every driving style, all-new Veloster offers driver-selectable Normal and Sport modes for vehicles with manual transmission, and additional Eco and Smart modes in automatic and DCT versions.
Eco suits cruising or gradual acceleration on level roads, and Normal suits medium acceleration and moderate hill climbing.
Sport provides a dynamic driving experience with quicker throttle response as well as greater steering weight and optimised gear shift timing for sharper acceleration.
Smart Mode automatically switches between Normal, Eco and Sport mode to best suit the driver’s style and the road conditions.

STANDARD SMARTSENSE™ SAFETY
All-new Veloster features a comprehensive suite of SmartSense™ advanced safety technologies as standard.
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) - City/Urban
Standard in every new Veloster is a Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system incorporating a Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function.
All variants except Veloster Turbo DCT feature a camera-based Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) City/Urban system which utilises a windscreen-mounted camera to detect other vehicles in front of Veloster. If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound a warning chime and display a warning in the Supervision cluster. FCW is active above speeds of 8km/h, up to speeds of 180 km/h.
Additionally, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) - City/Urban works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCW system warning). FCA - City/Urban is active above speeds of approximately 8 km/h, and will attempt to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 50 km/h.
Driver Attention Warning (DAW)
Driver Attention Warning (DAW) uses the windscreen-mounted camera to continually monitor the vehicle’s position within the lane, whilst also tracking steering inputs, brake pedal inputs, as well as time since last break, and operates between 60km/h and 180km/h.
Should the system detect careless driving (such as sudden steering or braking inputs and/or the inability to keep within a lane), the ‘Attention Level’ display on the cluster will continually decrease. Should the level decrease to a certain threshold, the DAW system will recommend that the driver take a break.
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System consists of two modes - Lane Departure Warning (LDW) mode, and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) mode.
LDW uses the windscreen-mounted camera to detect lane markings and monitor the vehicle’s position in the lane, operating at speeds of 60 km/h and above. Should the vehicle stray from the intended lane without indicators being activated, audible and visual warnings will be issued.
LKA can be activated at speeds of 60km/h and above where lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are detected. LKA helps prevent the vehicle from straying from the lane by providing steering intervention should the driver not react to warnings from the LDW system.
Both LKA and LDW are momentarily deactivated whenever turn signals are active. Additionally, the driver must maintain control of the vehicle by holding the steering wheel.
TURBO PREMIUM SMARTSENSE™ SAFETY FEATURES
Veloster Turbo features the following additional SmartSense™ safety technologies, depending on the customer’s chosen transmission.
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) - City/Urban/Interurban/Pedestrian detection - DCT variants
A camera and radar based Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system features in Veloster 1.6 DCT variants. The system utilises a windscreen-mounted camera to detect vehicles and pedestrians in front of Veloster. If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound a chime and display a warning in the Supervision cluster. FCW is active above speeds of 8km/h, and up to speeds of 65km/h (pedestrians) or 180km/h (other vehicles).
Additionally, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where driver intervention is not detected after a FCW system warning). FCA is active above speeds of approximately 8km/h, and will attempt to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 65 km/h (pedestrians and vehicles). <.p>
Between speeds of 60km/h and 180km/h, if activated (due to the detection of a potential collision with a vehicle), FCA will slow the vehicle in order to reduce the severity of the collision.
Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW)
Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) operates at speeds of 30km/h or above, using radar sensors on either side of the rear bumper to detect vehicles next to and diagonally behind Veloster. If a vehicle is present in the Veloster’s blind spot, BCW displays an alert in the exterior mirrors. If the driver proceeds to activate the corresponding indicator lights, a flashing warning is provided and an alert is sounded. The system also scans for vehicles approaching rapidly from the rear, and uses the same warning measures to alert the driver to the presence of fast-moving vehicles that may soon enter Veloster’s blind spot.
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning (RCCW)
The Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning (RCCW) uses the BCW system’s radar sensors to monitors for traffic approaching on either side of Veloster when reversing out of perpendicular parking spaces. Should RCCW detect a vehicle approaching, a warning will sound, and a visual warning will be displayed in the dash cluster.
High Beam Assist (HBA)
Using the same windscreen-mounted camera as the LKA system, High Beam Assist (HBA) scans the road ahead of Veloster, monitoring for street lights, as well as headlights and taillights of surrounding vehicles in front. Upon detection, the system automatically adjusts headlight range, switching between high and low beam.
HBA is active at speeds of 45km/h or above, and operational once the light switch (on the indicator lever), is placed in the Auto position and the lever pushed forward away from the driver.
Smart Cruise Control (SCC) - DCT variants
Smart Cruise Control (SCC) detects the speed and distance of vehicles ahead of the Veloster. SCC maintains a safe distance to the vehicle ahead, up to a pre-set speed (between 10km/h and 160km/h).
EXTERIOR DESIGN
All-new Veloster features a more intense and dynamic frontal styling treatment than the preceding model, incorporating Hyundai’s signature cascading grille with a three dimensional design, flanked by air curtain vents as part of a series of aero enhancements.
