Powertrains.

At the heart of the 2021 Santa Fe are two all-new SmartStream, 3.5 V6 petrol and 2.2 turbo-diesel engines.

Both units feature alloy head and block construction, to the reduction of both weight and internal frictional losses.

Tuning for improved mid-range power delivery, compared with the previous-generation units, brings improved driveability and fuel economy for both powertrains.

The smooth and powerful SmartStream 3.5-litre petrol engine in Santa Fe develops 200kW and 33Nm, and is paired with Hyundai’s in-house developed eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

The naturally aspirated V6 consumes 10.5L/100km on the official combined cycle, down from 10.6L/100km for the previous version.

The 148kW, 440Nm SmartStream 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine is teamed with Hyundai’s new SmartStream eight-speed DCT automatic and all-wheel drive.

The common-rail direct-injection four-cylinder uses 6.1L/100km on the official combined cycle, which represents a fuel economy improvement of 19% compared with the preceding turbo-diesel automatic pairing (7.5L/100km).

SmartStream ‘wet’ clutch eight-speed DCT.

Hyundai’s newly developed eight-speed Dual Clutch Transmission brings a crisp and decisive driving experience to Santa Fe turbo-diesel, and features a series of innovations.

The oil-submerged ‘wet’ clutch packs bring improved heat tolerance and durability compared with a dry-clutch mechanism, as well as reduced noise and harshness.

The transmission’s smooth friction points, combined with intelligent shift logic, provide comfortable shifts similar to those of a conventional torque converter automatic when taking-off and at low speed driving.

The DCT features a rev-matching function and delivers superb responsiveness as well as contributing to Santa Fe’s excellent fuel economy.

Driving Technology and Hardware.

Personalised Smart Drive Mode.

In the Active variant and above, Santa Fe’s standard Drive Mode Select system adopts an illuminated dial for the selection of its Comfort, Sport, Eco and Smart modes.

In addition, Smart Drive Mode now delivers a more personalised experience by matching an AI-optimised setting to each driver profile.

Terrain driving modes.

Santa Fe diesel Active and above feature a choice of terrain driving modes - Snow, Mud or Sand - which apply tailored settings for engine and braking control and torque vectoring.

Increased towing capacity & full-size spare.

2021 Santa Fe has a substantially upgraded 2,500kg braked towing capacity, up from the preceding version’s 2,000kg.

In addition, an upgraded 200kg tow-ball down weight (up from 100kg) eliminates the previous need to upgrade the rear suspension coil springs for heavy-duty applications.

A full-size spare wheel and tyre is standard for 2021 Santa Fe.

HTRAC Advanced AWD System.

New Santa Fe features Hyundai’s HTRAC® Advanced All-Wheel-Drive system.

Developed as a multi-mode system, HTRAC features an electronic, variable-torque-split clutch with active torque control between the front and rear axles.

The HTRAC AWD system apportions drive based on wheel- and vehicle-speed inputs. In combination with each of the driving modes, HTRAC optimises traction for maximum comfort, stability, acceleration and fuel economy.

Chassis Tuning.

Santa Fe is among the first Hyundai models to benefit from a new chassis tuning approach, which has evolved as a natural development of the local tuning program deployed by Hyundai Australia’s engineering team for the last decade.

The new approach sees Hyundai Australia involved early in the development of a model, providing HQ with input to achieve the ‘flavour’ of the tune required for the Australian market.

Then, vehicles are put through the testing and scoring system employed by Hyundai Australia to evaluate and sign off the tune, across a range of challenging city, highway, country and gravel roads.

2021 Santa Fe passed with flying colours.

“The Namyang R&D team has come up with something that works for our market to a tee - we’re super-happy with the way Santa Fe performs on Australian roads,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Product Planning and Development Specialist Tim Rodgers said.

“Because we now have two vehicles in our large SUV portfolio, Santa Fe can be that easy-to-drive, agile, dynamic SUV. It can be a little bit more sporty in flavour,” Rodgers said.

Santa Fe is still excellent on those big highway cruises and road-trips, but now offers a more engaging drive with surprising dynamic ability.”

Making this new tuning approach possible is the vast body of Australian tuning knowledge now present within Namyang.

“The teams working on these products have now spent so many hundreds of hours embedded with HMCA engineering that they intimately understand the dynamic qualities we want for our unique roads, and they know how to achieve them,” Rodgers said.

“Open collaboration between the Australian and Korean R&D teams is now central to any vehicle’s chassis tuning development - we are confident in this vehicle’s capabilities and in its ride-handling compromise for local conditions,” Rodgers said.

Comfort, Convenience and Connectivity.

Head-Up Display (HUD).

A Head-Up Display projected onto the windscreen presents vehicle speed, navigation commands, speed limits and traffic sign information, as well as alerts from active safety and driving assistance features.

The HUD allows users to select the info that is displayed, as well as height, rotation and brightness, to ensure excellent visibility across a range of lighting conditions.

Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM).

A Blind-Spot View Monitor in Santa Fe Highlander provides a video image of the left and right blind-spot zones in the cluster display when the corresponding turn signal is in operation, to support safe lane-change manoeuvres.

Surround View Monitor (SVM) w/ Rear View Monitor and Parking Guidance.

New Santa Fe features a Surround View Monitor that presents a bird’s eye view of the vehicle to enhance vision and confidence when manoeuvring.

A Rear View Monitor (RVM) system allows the rear camera display to remain on during driving as required, so that the driver can monitor the road conditions behind the vehicle.

A Parking Guidance function displays guide lines that swivel automatically as the steering wheel is turned.

Smart Power Tailgate.

Santa Fe’s Smart Tailgate brings ease of use by eliminating the need to physically open the tailgate for cargo area access.

When enabled and active, the system automatically opens the tailgate when a user carrying the Smart Key stays in the detection zone at the rear of the vehicle for three seconds.

The tailgate can also be opened using a switch in the cabin or the Smart Key button.

Smart Tailgate opening and closing speed, and lift height are easily adjusted to suit the environment and the user’s preferences.

Remote Smart Parking Assist System.

New to Hyundai, the Remote Smart Parking Assist System (RSPAS) allows for the vehicle to be maneuvered in and out of tight perpendicular parking spots using controls on the smart key, this feature is available on Highlander variants.

When parked up, Santa Fe can be shut down and locked without the need to re-enter the vehicle.

RSPAS utilises all the ultrasonic sensors fitted to Santa Fe, and will pause any parking moves if it detects an object in its path.

Shift-by-Wire transmission.

Santa Fe Active variant and above utilise Shift-by-Wire technology to replace a conventional gear lever with neat gear-selection pushbuttons, bringing a futuristic feel as well as freeing console space.

The SBW system is complemented by manual paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

4.2-inch colour instrument cluster display

A 4.2-inch colour LCD supervision cluster features in Santa Fe, Active and Elite variants. It presents a digital speedometer and a range of trip computer information, along with system status and visual alerts from SmartSenseTM and other safety systems.

12.3-inch digital Supervision cluster

Headlining in Santa Fe Highlander is a futuristic 12.3-inch high-resolution LCD digital Supervision digital instrument cluster that presents displays including speedometer and tachometer dials, the Blind-Spot Monitor view, Drive Mode themes, and SmartSenseTM info and alerts at a glance.

8.0-inch multimedia system.

A new 8.0-inch multimedia system in Santa Fe and Active variants features the ability to connect to Apple CarPlayTM or AndroidTM Auto via Wi-Fi, eliminating the need to use a cable.

The system also offers various connectivity features, including Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and a USB input.

AndroidTM Auto users that wish to connect via a USB cable may continue to do so by selecting the option in the multimedia unit.

10.25-inch satellite navigation system with DAB+ digital radio.

A high-tech 10.25-inch touch-screen is sited high on the dash in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander, to give front occupants a clear overview of navigation, audio and other information, with a choice of panoramic map view, or split-screen navigation/audio display.

Smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™ allows users to perform the operations usually carried out on the handset in a safer manner via the in-dash multimedia touchscreen.

Premium audio by Harman Kardon.

Maintaining a 10-speaker count, but now powered by Harman Kardon engineering, the premium audio in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander has never sounded better, offering exceptional sound quality through optimal system tuning.

Wireless (Qi standard) smartphone charging.

A wireless charging pad in the centre console, allows users to charge a compatible Qi-enabled smartphone without the use of cables.

For non-compatible devices, the purchase of a third-party smartphone accessory (such as a Qi-enabled phone case) may allow the use of the wireless charging feature.

Remote engine start.

A new Smart Key design now includes remote engine start functionality, allowing users to start as well as turn off Santa Fe from outside the vehicle.

Warming the cabin on a cool day or cooling it on a hot one is easy. Simply press the lock button on the Smart Key to wake the system up, and long press the hold button to start or stop the engine.

Dual-zone climate control air-conditioning.

A climate control air-conditioning system for Santa Fe Active and above ensures maximum comfort and convenience for occupants by automatically maintaining the set temperatures.

Two sets of fully automatic controls give the driver, front passenger and second-row occupants the luxury and comfort of being able to set their own temperature preferences.

Third-row air-conditioning outlets ensure optimum comfort for every occupant.

Driver Talk.

A Driver Talk feature in Elite and Highlander uses a high-definition microphone and Santa Fe’s audio system to allow the driver to speak to rear occupants without raising their voice.

The system automatically compensates for road and wind noise as the vehicle’s speed rises, so the driver can always be heard clearly through the rear speakers.

Personalised profiles.

In Elite and Highlander variants regular user as well as guest settings for the cluster, display, media and driving mode can be stored in discrete profiles.

Quiet Mode.

Quiet Mode mutes the speakers in the rear, and sets an upper limit on the volume through the front speakers, to allow rear occupants the hush needed to talk or sleep.

Remote rear air-conditioning control.

Remote control of the rear air-conditioning lets the driver easily adjust the settings for rear occupants, as well as bringing the ability to disable the rear air-conditioning controls.

Heated & ventilated seats.

Santa Fe Highlander gives front occupants the year-round comfort of heated and ventilated seats.

Three-stage heating elements warm the seats in cool weather, and three-stage ventilation fans blow a gentle stream of cooling air through the leather perforation during hot weather.

Highlander variant also features heated outboard second-row seats.

Panoramic glass sunroof.

A panoramic glass sunroof brings light and a sense of openness to Santa Fe Highlander’s cabin, with a motorised sunblind for when shade is required.

Walk-in Switch.

A one-touch ‘Walk-in’ switch on the kerb side eliminates the need to manually flip and slide the second row seatback, for easy access to the third row.

In addition, an electric release in the cargo bay allows one-touch folding of the seatbacks.

Safe Exit Assist (SEA).

The Safe Exit Assist (SEA) system in Active, Elite and Highlander reduces the risk of occupants exiting Santa Fe when the surroundings make it unsafe to do so.

The system works in conjunction with the radar sensors on either side of the rear bumper to detect vehicles approaching from the rear.

When the vehicle is stopped and SEA is active, the system scans Santa Fe’s rear path.

If a door is opened while an approaching vehicle is detected, the system will issue an audible alert and display a warning in the instrument cluster, advising that the exiting occupant should ‘watch for traffic’.

The electronic child safety lock system provides and additional layer of protection, by allowing the driver to lock the rear doors via a switch, to prevent children seated in the rear of Santa Fe from opening the doors.

Additionally, the electronic child safety locking system works with the SEA system to prevent the unlocking of the rear doors when it is not safe to do so, providing an additional message advising that the exiting occupant should ‘check surroundings then try again’.

Rear Occupant Alert (ROA).

The Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) system aims to prevent the unintentional leaving or locking-in of children or pets in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander.

The system utilises an ultrasonic sensor in the headlining to detect movement in the cabin.

When active, the system registers the entry of rear occupants via the rear doors opening and closing.

Upon opening the driver’s door after parking, ROA issues a warning chime and prompts the driver via the cluster to ‘check rear seats’.

If the user proceeds to close the door and lock the vehicle, the ROA system then becomes operational for a 24-hour period.

During this time if movement is detected inside the cabin the system will activate the horn for a period of 25 seconds to alert the driver and others to the situation.

SmartsenseTM safety.

In addition to its superb passive safety and six airbags, 2021 Santa Fe features an extensive standard suite of advanced SmartSenseTM technologies.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) - Junction Turning.

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system, when active, utilises the front radar sensor and windscreen-mounted camera to detect and monitor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in front of Santa Fe.

If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound a warning chime and display a warning in the cluster. FCW is active from speeds of 10 km/h, up to 85 km/h for pedestrians and cyclists, or 180 km/h for vehicles.

Additionally, FCA works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCW system warning).

FCA is active above speeds of approximately 10km/h, and will attempt to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 65 km/h (pedestrians and cyclists) or 75 km/h (vehicles). When activated above these speeds, FCA will slow the vehicle to reduce the severity of a potential collision.

In all scenarios of operation (visual and audible warning, slowing down, or bringing the vehicle to complete stop), pedestrian and cyclist detection will only occur where a pedestrian is moving at speeds below 10 km/h and a cyclist below 20 km/h.

A Junction Turning (FCA-JT) function detects oncoming traffic when turning right (with the right indicator activated) at an intersection. If a collision appears likely, the brakes are applied to reduce the chance of a collision.

FCA-JT is operational at vehicle speeds of 10 km/h to 30 km/h while the oncoming vehicle speed is between approximately 30 km/h and 70 km/h.

Driver Attention Warning (DAW) with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert.

Driver Attention Warning (DAW) continually monitors the vehicle’s position within the lane using the windscreen-mounted camera, while tracking steering inputs, brake pedal inputs, and elapsed time since last break.

Should the system detect careless driving – such as sudden steering/braking inputs and/or inability to keep within a lane – the ‘Attention Level’ display on the cluster will continually decrease.

Should the level decrease to a certain threshold, the DAW system will recommend that the driver takes a break.

DAW is in operation at speeds between 60km/h and 180km/h.

The system also features Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, which monitors the vehicle ahead when Santa Fe is stopped in traffic.

If the vehicle ahead drives off, and the Santa Fe driver fails to accelerate away, the system will sound a chime to alert the potentially inattentive driver.

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA).

BCA detects vehicles in Santa Fe’s blind spot and provides a visual alert in the exterior mirrors. If the driver proceeds to activate the corresponding indicator lights, a flashing visual warning is provided and an alert is sounded. The system is in operation at vehicle speeds of 20 km/h or above.

The system also scans for vehicles approaching rapidly from the rear, and uses the same warning measures to alert the driver of vehicles approaching at high speed which may soon enter Santa Fe’s blind spot.

Operational at speeds above 60km/h, BCA can initiate the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to help avoid a collision with an approaching vehicle, next to or behind Santa Fe, which it deems as being at a high risk of contact due to its proximity.

As an avoidance manoeuvre the system gently applies braking to the wheels on the opposing side of the potential collision point, to steer the vehicle away from a potential collision and avoid or mitigate against damage.

BCA in Santa Fe also can mitigate against potential collisions when exiting a parallel park.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA).

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) monitors for traffic approaching on either side of Santa Fe when reversing out of perpendicular parking spaces.

Should RCCA detect a vehicle approaching, the system will sound a chime and display a warning on the cluster and multimedia screens, and in the corresponding exterior mirror.

In the event the driver does not respond to a warning, the system may activate the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to apply braking force and help avoid a collision with the approaching vehicle.

The RCCA system utilises the BCA system’s radar sensors, and is in operation when travelling at 8km/h or below. It can detect approaching vehicles travelling at speeds above 5km/h.

Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist - Rear (PCA-R)

The Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist system in Highlander warns the driver of obstacles when reversing. If the vehicle is in danger of a collision, a warning will sound and the vehicle can engage emergency braking to prevent a collision. PCA-R is operational at reversing speeds below 10 km/h.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) consists of two switchable functions – Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Active LKA. LDW uses the windscreen-mounted camera to detect lane markings and monitor the vehicle’s position in the lane.

Should the vehicle stray from the intended lane without indicators being activated, audible and visual warnings will be issued. The system is in operation at vehicle speeds of 60km/h and above.

The Active LKA function helps prevent the vehicle from straying from the lane and provides steering intervention as the vehicle is about to leave the lane. Where required, LKA provides earlier steering intervention in order to assist the vehicle in staying in the centre of the lane.

Active LKA is operational at speeds of 60km/h or above where lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are detected.

Both LDW and Active LKA are momentarily deactivated whenever turn signals are active. Additionally, the driver must maintain control of the vehicle by holding the steering wheel.

Lane Following Assist (LFA).

Lane Following Assist (LFA) detects lane markings on the road using the front windscreen-mounted camera, and provides steering assistance to ensure Santa Fe stays in the centre of the lane.

When the system is activated, the indicator on the cluster will illuminate.

The colour of the indicator will change depending on the condition of LFA system. Green indicates that the system is enabled, and white indicates that the system is ready.

Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go.

Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go detects the speed and distance of vehicles ahead of Santa Fe.

SCC maintains a safe distance to the vehicle ahead, up to a pre-set speed, between 30km/h and 180km/h.

The Stop & Go function works in stop/start traffic, bringing the vehicle to a stop when appropriate, and then automatically accelerating it back to the original set speed.

If the vehicle is stationary for more than three seconds, SCC will prompt the driver to continue cruise conditions using the steering wheel switches.

Santa Fe’s SCC also features Overtaking Acceleration Assist functionality. With SCC enabled, the driver can indicate and move into a clear passing lane and SCC will quickly accelerate up to its preset speed.

High Beam Assist (HBA).

High Beam Assist (HBA) scans the road ahead of Santa Fe using the windscreen-mounted camera, monitoring for street lights, as well as headlights and taillights of vehicles in front.

Upon detection, the system automatically adjusts headlight range, switching between high and low beam.

HBA is active at speeds of 40km/h or more and is operational when the light switch (on the indicator stalk) is placed in the Auto position and the stalk is pushed away from the driver.
